Device Groups
A device group is a collection of display devices, typically located together at a single store location. You assign content to device groups, and all devices in the group display that content.
Viewing Device Groups
Device groups appear on the home page alongside templates. You can also access them from:
- Home page - Shows all device groups with sync status
- Settings > Device Groups - Admin view with management options
- Store Details - Shows device groups for a specific store
Creating a Device Group
Requires: Admin or Manager role
- Navigate to Settings > Device Groups
- Click Add Device Group
- Select a Store - The location for this device group
- Enter a Device Group Name - Descriptive name (e.g., “Main Floor Screens”)
- Set Number of Device Slots - How many placeholder slots to create (1-20, defaults to 4)
- Click Create Device Group
Device Group Editor
Click any device group from the home page to open the editor. This uses the same interface as templates, with some differences specific to device groups.
Device Slots and Presence
Each slot represents a physical screen position:
- Placeholder slots are waiting for a device to register
- Registered devices show the device name and online/offline status indicator
- Device slots are fixed based on the group’s device count setting - you cannot add or remove individual devices from the editor
- Click a registered device’s name to view its device info page
If no devices have registered yet, the editor shows an empty state explaining that devices need to register via QR codes.
Assigning Content
For each device slot:
- Click + Add content at the bottom of the device column
- Browse or search your media library
- Select one or more media items and click Add
- Set display duration for each item
- Drag items to reorder playback sequence
Note: Device groups only support media directly - you cannot add scripts to a device group or group media into scripts. When you publish a template containing scripts to a device group, the script’s media items are expanded into individual entries.
Scheduling
Configure when content displays:
- All Day - Content plays continuously (default)
- Time Range - Specific start and end times
- Date Range - Limit to specific dates
- Recurrence - Daily, weekly, or custom patterns
- Exceptions - Exclude specific dates
Sync Status
Device groups track their relationship with templates:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| In Sync | Content matches the last published template |
| Edited | You’ve edited the device group directly after a template publish |
| Update available | The template was updated but not republished here |
| No template | No template has been published to this group |
Linking to Templates
Device groups can receive content from templates:
- Create or edit a template with your content
- Open the template and click Publish
- Use the quick publish dialog or click Advanced: Select specific device groups
- Select the device groups you want to update
- Click Publish Template (quick) or Publish Selected (advanced)
After publishing, the device group shows as “In Sync” with that template.
Applying a Template
From within a device group editor, you can apply a template directly:
- Open the device group editor
- Click the Apply Template button in the navigation menu
- Select from available templates or the previously published template
- Confirm to replace the current content
This is useful when you want to update a single device group with template content without going through the template publish flow.
Direct Editing vs Templates
You can edit device group content directly, but:
- Direct edits mark the group as “Edited”
- Re-publishing a template overwrites direct edits
- For consistent content across locations, use templates
Managing Device Groups
From Settings
Settings > Device Groups shows:
- All device groups organized by store
- Device count for each group
- Filter by store using the store filter or URL parameters
- Create, edit, or delete groups
You can edit device group properties directly from the settings list:
- Click the pencil icon next to the name to rename a device group
- Click the pencil icon next to the device count to adjust the number of device slots (cannot reduce below the number of registered devices)
When filtering by a specific store, a breadcrumb link appears to return to viewing all device groups.
Deleting a Device Group
- Open Settings > Device Groups
- Click the trash icon next to the device group
- Confirm deletion
Warning: Deleting a device group removes all associated devices and content assignments.
